Richard Guylforde

Listen

Richard Guylforde is one of the few English nobles who wished to travel to the Holy Lands. His journey was a personal one. However, the notes he took during this journey could only be published 300 years later. Perhaps the most important point in Guylforde's notes is the first instance of the juxtaposition of the concept of the Turk and the Greek in European travelers. This can be considered the beginning of Philhellenism (Admiration for Greek Culture), expressed with admiration for Greek culture:

"Beyond the Greek land lies a sea, with Asia on one arm. Almost at the entrance point stands Troy; the harbor of Bozcaada (Tenedos) rises from the sea. All the lands of Troy belong to the Turks and are rightfully called Turkey. However, the Turks in later times conquered the Greek land and other countries and named these places Turkey."
